Whether you are in a rush or have the whole morning to yourself, Gastown has some of the best options for breakfast in the city.
Probably the best avocado on toast in the city – Nelson the Seagull is the kind of place you could comfortably linger in all day long. As if from bygone days, they bake their own bread and you can tell. The menu focuses on simple recipes, like toasted muesli and poached eggs on house bread, and their all-organic treats are a delicious surprise. As for drinks, their signature flat whites and house-made almond milk are rather memorable.
A haven of good food and coffee – you can almost always find a place to sit here (you may have to share a table)- Birds & The Beets, is a Gastown hotspot. Nestled between Alexander and Powell, their breakfast menu focuses on uncomplicated house-made offerings with fresh options like chia bircher museli, brioche bun sandwiches and yogurt with granola & fruit. Their yogurt and pickled vegetables are also made in house, along with ginger beer, kombucha and soda syrups. In addition to cold pressed juices, there’s Bows x Arrows and Matchstick coffee (a favourite with coffee lovers).
With its friendly and communal vibe, The Cambie Gastown serves up hearty breakfast classics nice and early each day – Monday to Friday 7am – noon and on the weekends from 8am – 2pm. Go all in with The Lumberjack – lots of eggs, bacon, sausages with tots, toast and a waffle on the side, or grab a Breakfast Burrito to go. They also have Eggs Benny, Chorizo Hash, Avo Toast, Chicken & Waffles and The Cambie Scramble.
Bambo Café feels like you’re sitting in your best friends kitchen, sharing great food and conversation. There’s a reason it’s been here in Gastown for 16 years. You can order organic fair trade coffee made to your liking and choose from an array of pastries, bagels, and omlettes served with house bread, fresh fruit and hashbrowns. Vegan and gluten free homemade Azizi soups are also available. They are well known for their all natural Banana Milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices.
Smart Mouth Café has some lovely spots for good people watching along Water Street. Set up camp on the streetside patio or at one of the high windows near the front. Their menu includes tasty handmade granola, gourmet sandwiches and baked treats. The coffee is locally roasted, but if you prefer something different, try their special house chai tea, brewed in-house using premium whole spices.
Cordova Street’s – Brioche is perhaps one of Gastown’s most consistent cafés – their food quality is always top notch. Pretty much everything comes made fresh daily from their own kitchen. Their pastries are some of the neighbourhood’s finest. Also known for their excellent breakfast menu, Brioche offers homestyle mains: french toast and custom omlettes with a fresh sourdough, bagette or focaccia toast. For a savoury dish, try their eggs paired with a house roasted New York steak over creamy mushrooms, or chilled smoke salmon over a bed of fresh scrambled eggs.
A unique menu can be found at Silvestre Deli & Bistro – they specialize in authentic Peruvian food and have customized their breakfast menu to include ingredients and flavors that you may not always encounter with the first meal of the day. Choose from their Tortilla (Peruvian omlette) Tamal (steam cooked corn dough) and Chicharron Breakfast (deep fried pork belly). If that’s not your thing, you can still go with the classics – Eggs & Bacon or a Waffle Breakfast.
