Gastown Grand Prix
5:30 pm

Gastown

For one day, the charming cobblestone streets of Gastown are transformed into one of the fastest, best-loved and most challenging cycling race courses in North America. This event is free for spectators and is guaranteed to be a fun afternoon/evening out.

A Criterium, also called a “crit”, is a high speed action-packed bike race that is held on a closed course, that is usually between 800 and 1,500 meters. Criteriums are mass-start races where riders travel around the course for a set number of laps or time: i.e., 50 laps or 90 minutes. During the race, riders will also race for prizes called primes (pronounced “preems”). If a rider is involved in an accident, they can have one free lap to repair the damage in the mechanics pit before re-entering the race.

The event combines three different categories of races: youth, women and men.

Just a Season‘s Scott Smith has helped make a lot of other people sound great over the years. From the arena-sized mainstream country of Aaron Pritchett and the heartland roots-rock of Barney Bentall, to a slew of insurgent Vancouver club champs like Rich Hope, Speeding West, The Real Ponchos, and Terminal Station―Smith has been everybody’s ringer, flipping between guitar and pedal steel while casually raising the bar with lightning technique and unfailing good taste. With his new band, Just A Season, Scott Smith switches from sideman to frontman, enlisting some of his favourite players to put the right groove on a collection of songs that recall an era when folk, rock, and country met in a sun-baked embrace.

Gastown

September 21, 22, 23rd, 2017

Brief Encounters is an interdisciplinary performance series that fuses genres and pushes artistic boundaries.

From Sunset to 10:00pm this free festival will embed ten shows throughout Gastown in unusual spaces and engage the neighbourhood with performances, immersive installations, multi-media projections.  These shows – in store windows, parking lots, studio spaces or street corners will be viewable live, online and at the digital Remix Area, a lively hub where the performances will be streamed live and remixed for a further mash-up of space, place and performance.  Certain Gastown streets will be closed to vehicular traffic, allowing a pedestrian audience to engage at their own speed, in their own way.
