Gastown In January

Plant carrots in January and you’ll never have to eat carrots. ~ Gardening Saying.

Good to know.

Welcome to a new year and to your January. This month brings to the neighbourhood lots of lovely live music, Dine Out Vancouver, art shows, a feature on Bia Boro Gastown, and a new owner at Heathers The Flowershop.

Here’s what’s happening.

Entertainment

The 2nd Floor at the Water Street Cafe

If you haven’t yet been to The 2nd Floor, the 20 steps up from the Water Street Cafe are well worth the climb. This is a true hideaway. A New York city and art deco inspired jazz club, intimate and warm with only so many seats, so it’s wise to get there on time before the first set. With live jazz, soul, and blues most nights, patrons can enjoy the full menu from the restaurant with the option of enjoying 2 full sets of music, or a small digestif at a candle lit table for two.

First Seating 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm – Second Seating 7:45 pm to 8:45 pm.

Arts + Culture

Topography at KI Atelier
Opening: Thursday Jan. 16, 5:00-7:00 pm

Exhibition runs Jan 16 – 24 (By Appointment)

Curated by Mini and Michael Gallerists at KI Atelier

Featuring works by Michael Lee, Milk DoNg, Mini Choi, Paul Spilsbury, and Samuel Lee

An art exhibition redefines the elements of landforms. We look at the world around us with a sense of meaning and emotion. Artists’ genuine sensitivity to the existing landscape brings a new perspective to natural scenery and abstract art. Whether the work is a departure from more traditional approaches to landscapes or a reflection of contemporary developments in photography, it is a perfect moment to extricate oneself from the city and experience stillness.Through painting, illustration, photography, and multi-media art, artists illuminate the atmosphere and push further the viewer’s imagination.

Recently taken over by new management, Heather’s The Flowershop offers expanded services for the new year. With a revamped design, the current selection of flora & fauna is pleasing to eye and the nose. We are happy to welcome new owner Azin Taj to the neighbourhood.

Bia Boro Gastown: Remade and Reborn

Once a mixed gender boutique selling a rich variety of earthy, soft clothing and underwear, has now become one of the best menswear shops in Gastown.

We could wax poetic, extolling virtues, repeating some blah-blah about how you can find this, that, and so on but none of it would do this gem of a shop justice.

Allow the pictures to bear evidence of how awesome this store is and how a secret like Bia Boro Gastown can’t stay hidden for very long.
