What: Oppenheimer Warehouse
Where: 100 Powell Street, Gastown
Built: 1886
The Oppenheimer Warehouse is Vancouver’s oldest brick building. Under construction at the time of the Great Fire that destroyed Vancouver on June 13, 1886, the building was unharmed by the fire and was one of the first substantial post-fire structures to be completed. The warehouse was built for the Oppenheimer Brothers, an Eastern-European merchant family that owned the first wholesale grocery business on the mainland of British Columbia.
David Oppenheimer was the celebrated ‘Father of Vancouver’. He was the Mayor of Vancouver between 1888-91. The building served as a temporary City Hall during this period.

The Oppenheimer Warehouse is a fine example of heritage conservation with restorations to both inside and out that have retained the historical integrity of the original structure. The building was restored by Bryan Adams in the 1990’s for a state-of-the-art recording studio known as The Warehouse Studio. The Warehouse Studio started in 1987 in the basement of a house in West Vancouver and ten years later in 1997, opened its doors at 100 Powell Street.
Clients of the Warehouse Studio include: 54-40, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Colin James, David Foster, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Metallica, Michael Buble, Nickleback, Sarah McLachlan, Jim Bryson, – the list goes on and on.
