THINGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK IN GASTOWN

Art has found a new home behind Gastown's Steam Clock. This week, the neighbourhood will tip its hat to international art, visual display, denim culture, and other stylish endeavours. Here's a list of events to keep on your radar.

ART HAS A NEW HOME

Art is meant to be a part of your life and not kept in a gilded cage. With a desire to make artwork accessible to the general public, Marc Alexander Ullrich and Stefanie Harig founded LUMAS, a concept store & gallery. Together they opened the first LUMAS gallery in Berlin, eventually expanding into Hamburg, Seoul, New York – and now, Gastown.

The LUMAS manifesto is to create a democratic art market. Out of the museum and into the home, LUMAS carries affordable, signed originals by artists whose work typically costs a fortune. LUMAS art is generally available in limited editions of 75 to 150, whereas the conventional art market customarily offers 5-print editions.

The new Gastown store, located behind the Steam Clock, is the first LUMAS location in Canada. Pop by and peruse their vast portfolio of museum-quality works at 305 Water Street.

INFORM PRESENTS BOX INTERIOR DESIGN

On February 26th from 5pm to 7pm, Inform will celebrate their new window display by Box Interior Design. Principles Jay Brooks and Cynthia Penner along with designers Coralynn Buss, Christina Yee, Jaclyn Walker, Banafsheh Sharif, and Tricia Link will be present. Refreshments will be served.

FRESHEN YOUR JEANS AT DUTIL’S FEBRUARY FADE

Like a fine wine, raw denim gets infinitely better with age. It’s a little known fact that dutil intends on spreading. To get the word out, they will host a raw denim fade competition on February 28th, 4pm-5pm.

The contest celebrates the religious devotion to keeping jeans unwashed for an extended period of time. The top three with the most distinct fades will receive a brand new pair to start working in. To enter, you are required to be in-store with your jeans at 3:30pm for registration. Dutil’s appointed panel of judges will then determine this year’s winners, and announced at 5pm.

Keeping in mind that denim can get a little musty during its aging process, the shop will provide a denim freshening booth. Like a spray tan, but instead you can keep your clothes on while getting freshened up. dutil will also welcome representatives from Doublewood, Nudie Jeans, and Freenote Cloth.

Get your jeans freshened, enjoy a Pabst Blue Ribbon and celebrate with fellow denimheads while discovering this year’s winners of dutil’s Fade February competition.

Are you ready for the Best Night Ever? On February 28th, a very talented group of gents will hit the stage at Guilt & Company. Self-described as a group of jazz nerds and metal aficionados experimenting with pop music, guests are in for a surprise. Best Night Ever is know to get the crowd moving with their unique blend of sophisticated chops and infectious grooves. To get a taste of what’s to come, preview their music here.
