THINGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK IN GASTOWN
Written by Gastown Admin
JD’S BARBERSHOP SUMMER SOLSITCE PARTY
The longest day of the year is approaching and JD’s Barbershop‘s Gastown location will celebrate in true fashion with their annual Summer Solstice Party. Join them on Sunday June 21st for tasty bites by Boy with a Knife Catering, Pabst Blue Ribbon, tunes by DJ Harvey Harvey and rad giveaways from their neighbours in Gastown. All proceeds from the event will go towards helping Jess Moss reach her fundraising goal to contend for a spot at the Aprons for Gloves boxing event.
TWISTED ICE CREAM IS NOW OPEN
With this year’s opening of Soft Peaks, and now Twisted Ice Cream, it looks like we’re screaming for ice cream.
The newly open shop brings boutique ice cream on Water Street across from Lamplighter. Think vanilla soft serve with tasty drizzles. Everything from coconut flakes to Oreo crumbles, and pistachio nut to butter pecan drizzle is offered on the menu. The shop is open Sunday through Thursday, 12pm to 10pm, and Friday through Saturday, 12pm to midnight.
GALLERY GACHET PRESENTS THREE EXHIBITIONS
Gallery Gachet is a unique artist run centre and is presenting three distinct exhibitions from June 19th to July 31st. These exhibitions ask the viewer to consider the social, psychological, and cultural effects of encounters with urban development.
Mad Pride: Develop Madness
Develop Madness signifies, among other things, the transformation of anarchic, organic and historicized urban space into commodity.
Street Sign
Using reconstructed street signs and photography, Quin Martins considers the design of urban space as a series of curated choices. Layered upon Martins’ condensed representation of public space, Andrew McPhail’s Watch Your Step stakes out the boundaries of personal and private space in the public realm with a carpet assembled from discarded garments.
Salon Shop Exhibition
An immersive multimedia video installation, Demolishing Grief: Phase One, uses video footage of St. Michael’s Residential School demolition to unearth a history of emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual mistreatment.
CATCHING SPORTS ACTION
Sports fan? Get off the couch and catch the games in action at The Blarney Stone. The neighbourhood pub boasts a 20 foot mega flatscreen and will be displaying the FIFA Womens World Cup games and Stanley Cup Playoffs.
And if you swing by Thursday through Saturday, you can also catch live entertainment from DJ Steel, The Usual Suspects, The Sheets, and LaBidos. For a heads up on Blarney Stone’s upcoming events, take a peak at their monthly calendar here.
CASK NIGHTS & #SOCIAL WHISKY
Whisky Wisemen is making it easier to wind down the week with #socialwhisky events held on every third Thursday of the month at Shebeen Whisky House.
Catch up with old friends and make new ones at their upcoming event on Thursday June 18th. As usual, there will be no cover charge and the first 50 attendees will receive a free ounce of whisky courtesy of Glenmorangie. After that, 10% of your total spend for the evening will go towards Power To Be Adventure Therapy Society, as will $1 from every signature Wiseman cocktail sold.
If you prefer a pint over whisky, round up your friends for The Irish Heather‘s Cask Night on Thursday June 18th. Running every second Thursday through Sunday, The Heather will feature a new cask produced by a leading beer producer with sleeves priced at $6 (16oz). Any beer left over will be served on “finish our cask Sunday,” where cask beer will be priced at $5 per sleeve until it runs out.
NOTTORUNO TO HOST A NIGHT IN JAPAN
Today (June 15), Notturno is set to host a culinary journey to Japan for the June edition of their wine dinner series. Chef Robitaille and Ben DeChamplain explore one of the world’s most innovative gastronomic cultures with unique plates like soya egg with sake cured salmon roe, halibut cheeks with saikyo miso, spicy quail tempura and more.
Seats for the upcoming dinner are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot and call 604-720-3145. Tickets are $125 and include complimentary sake and beer. Check here to preview the night’s menu.
