THINGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK IN GASTOWN
Written by Gastown Admin
MAKE MUSIC VANCOUVER
Our second free outdoor event of the year is happening on Wednesday June 24th, between 5pm-10pm.
Gastown sidewalks will transform into an array of live music stages and dance floors as more than 100 amateur and professional musicians gather to perform free for the public. This grass roots music festival celebrates all genres of music from rock to reggae. Visit here for more event details.
NINJA FLAIR BARTENDING COMPETITION
Don’t try this at home. Portside Pub is hosting the Ninja Flair Bartending Competition on Tuesday June 23rd. Starting at 10pm, you can catch barmen juggling cocktail mixers in the air and mastering the fine art of flair bartending tricks. The $10 cover for this non-ticketed event includes a complimentary beverage.
ALEXANDER KEITH’S LOBSTER DINNER
You’ll want to grab a bib for this one. The Blarney Stone is teaming up with Alexander Keith’s to host a tasty, three-course lobster dinner with complimentary Alexander Keith’s and Goose Island IPA drafts. The 1.5lb lobster taken straight from the salty waters and into the pot is complimented with a choice of two starters and a creme brulee with gingersnaps for dessert. Visit here to purchase your ticket.
BLACK & BLUE FUNDRAISER FINALE
Jeff and Reece from the Blarney Stone are raising proceeds to contend for a spot at the Aprons for Gloves Restaurant Rumble charity boxing event. To help them reach their goal, Blarney Stone is throwing a black & blue themed party with live music, burgers & brews, and a meat draw. Come by on Thursday June 25h and help Jeff and Reece glove up for the big Rumble. Visit here to purchase your ticket.
A COLLECTIVE MARKEPLACE
On Sunday June 28th, local designers collaborate to bring you a day of music, cocktails and fashion. Community is a platform for young Vancouver companies to showcase their unique items that are normally available exclusively online. Join Community for some shopping and meet the entrepreneurs behind your favourite brands.
All proceeds from the event go to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. Visit here to purchase your ticket by donation.
BROMANCE NIGHT LIVE AT M.I.A.
M.I.A. is set to present ‘Bromance Night’ on Thursday June 25th. In late 2011, Louis “Brodinski” Rogé and Manu Barron launched a platform to collaborate with their friends. The now nicknamed #BMC is a collection of French producers, including Brodinski, Gesaffelstein, Louisahhh and Gener8ion, who are “all about the music”. Visit here for more event details.
CALIBRE AND MC DRS
Alexander Gastown welcomes Calibre and MC DRS to their venue on Thursday June 25th. Dominick Martin aka Calibre is responsible for some of the most beautiful and sublime tracks in Drum & Bass. Releasing on the most distinguished labels, including his own Signature Recordings, Calibre’s distinctive sound has progressed taking on elements of jazz, funk, dub and techno whilst losing none of its soul. Visit here for ticket information.
DON’T FORGET….
TWISTED ICE CREAM IS NOW OPEN
There’s a new ice cream store in town! Twisted Ice Cream has opened on Water Street (across from the Lamplighter) offering boutique vanilla soft serve with tasty drizzles like Oreo crumbles, pistachio, and butter pecan. If you’re craving a sweet fix, the shop is open Sunday through Thursday between 12pm to 10pm, and Friday through Saturday between 12pm to midnight.
NEW EXHIBITIONS AT GALLERY GACHET
Gallery Gachet is a unique artist run centre and is presenting three distinct exhibitions from June 19th to July 31st. These exhibitions ask the viewer to consider the social, psychological, and cultural effects of encounters with urban development.
Mad Pride: Develop Madness
Develop Madness signifies, among other things, the transformation of anarchic, organic and historicized urban space into commodity.
Street Sign
Using reconstructed street signs and photography, Quin Martins considers the design of urban space as a series of curated choices. Layered upon Martins’ condensed representation of public space, Andrew McPhail’s Watch Your Step stakes out the boundaries of personal and private space in the public realm with a carpet assembled from discarded garments.
Salon Shop Exhibition
An immersive multimedia video installation, Demolishing Grief: Phase One, uses video footage of St. Michael’s Residential School demolition to unearth a history of emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual mistreatment.
WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT
Guilt & Co welcomes Juno Award Winner, Chris Gestrin, to their stage on Wednesday June 24th. Chris Gestrin has become an integral part of the Canadian music scene. As a versatile pianist and multi-keyboardist, composer, engineer and producer, Chris has appeared on over 220 albums covering a wide range of musical styles from avant-garde electronica to greasy soul organ.
