THINGS TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK IN GASTOWN
Written by Gastown Admin
MEET GASTOWN’S NEWEST CAFÉ
New kids on the block, The Birds & The Beets opened last week on 55 Powell and we’re pretty excited about the homemade goodies. The new café offers Bow + Arrows coffee and breakfast, sandwiches, salads and snacks. In the kitchen, the team makes their own yogurt and pickled vegetables, and is working on crafting house soda syrups. Drop by and say hello – Birds & The Beets is open during weekdays between 7am-6pm, and on weekends between 9am-5pm.
FIGHT FOOD MENU
Would you volunteer to get punched in the face? Guilt & Co barman, David Attar is getting ready to step into the boxing ring for the Restaurant Rumble – but first, he needs to meet his fundraising goal. In support, Guilt & Co has teamed up with holistic nutritionist, Jana Finkbiner to create ‘Fight Food’ menu items with partial proceeds going towards Aprons for Gloves. Come down and order a bite from their Fight Food menu to help David contend for a spot at the annual boxing event.
MINDFUL CELLPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
We love cellphone cameras for their ease in sharing events, but it can often be a distraction. Artist Quin Martins is coming to Gallery Gachet to lead a workshop in the practice of mindful cellphone photography. The workshop – held on Saturday July 25th between 3-5pm – explores the concept of using cellphones as a mindfulness tool and shares tips on how we can connect with ourselves and environment. AESOP COMES TO GASTOWN
Australian apothecary, Aesop, is now open at 19 Water Street (right next to Secret Location). With skin, hair and body care products, each store is unique, often executed by a local design studio to create a one-of-a-kind space. Step into the space and you’ll be wowed by the use of wood. Stay a little longer for a consultation, and you’ll leave a convert. Aesop is open daily from 11am-7pm.
GET A HI-FIVE AT NOON
Grilled cheese? Yes please. Gastown’s secret sandwich shop is now open for lunch. Hi-Five is serving their signature and humorously named grilled cheese sandy’s (like the Cheddie Vedder or the Melter Skelter) between 11:30am and 2:30pm from Tuesday to Friday. There is also a daily salad feature and seasonal fruit slushies that are sure to cut through this heat wave. The address is 22 East Cordova, but if you can’t find the magic window, just walk a few paces east of Carrall on the south side of Cordova.
WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT
On Tuesday July 21st, Guilt & Co is presenting an intimate and interactive live performance – The Darlings Cabaret. This show doesn’t take place solely on stage but all over the room fusing rock & jazz with cabaret-style dance. Order a few cocktails before they hit the stage at 9:30pm – the Darlings Cabaret is a sultry spectacle that will leave you blushing – click here for a sneak peak.
