MUSEUM TAKEOVER HONOURS SANTA CRUZ SKATE LEGENDS
A badass store takeover is going down at STR/KE MVMNT this week. The takeover celebrates 30 years of The Screaming Hand, an illustration conceived in 1985 by Jim Phillips Sr. and the official stamp for Speed Wheels Santa Cruz – one of the most recognizable skate logos of all time. This is a tribute to the legendary graphic artist and skateboarding icons who made a permanent mark on the skate industry dating back to the 60’s.
The pop-up skate museum pays homage to the past and future of skateboarding featuring the work of 47 artists including Jim Phillips Sr., Jimbo Phillips, Colby Phillips, Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant, Todd Bratrud, Aye Jay Bigfoot, Mark “Fos” Foster and a roster of skate influencers.
The show is up on Wednesday July 29th 11am-6pm. Catch it while you can!
BEHIND THE GOLD VEIL
Inuit Gallery invites guests to view exquisite works by artist, Rande Cook in ‘Behind the Gold Veil’, on display now until August 21st. In Behind the Gold Veil, Rande Cook explores the metaphorical value and material possibilities of gold and its relationship to tradition, narrative, and spirituality. Rande Cook’s artistic practice reflects his awareness of the complex relationship between his cultural traditions and the modern world, and his embrace of new mediums revives traditional narratives in a new light. NEW TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
18TH AMENDMENT BARBER SHOP
Gastown’s newest barbershop, 18th Amendment, is now open. Get yourself to their classic Koken barber chairs for a hot razor shave, haircut or ’stache/beard trim. The shop is fully stocked with homemade pomade, beard oils and moustache waxes. Veteran barbers Nick Hickling and Jake Hurn hold down the fort – come say hello to these good looking gents and get groomed in their brand new digs at 77 E. Cordova.
THE BIRDS & THE BEETS
The Birds & The Beets has opened its doors on 55 Powell. We’re pretty excited about their homemade goodies. The new café offers Bows + Arrows coffee and simple breakfast options, as well as sandwiches, salads and snacks. In the kitchen, the team makes their own yogurt, pickled vegetables and food preserves, and they’re working on crafting house soda syrups.
Drop by and say hello – Birds & The Beets is open weekdays between 7am-6pm, and on weekends from 9am-5pm.
AESOP
Australian apothecary, Aesop, is now open at 19 Water Street (right next to Secret Location). With skin, hair and body care products, each store is unique, often executed by a local design studio to create a one-of-a-kind space. Step inside be wowed by the use of wood. Stay a little longer for a consultation, and you’ll leave a convert.
