The Musical Playground is an interactive installation that features unique sound-making instruments for all ages and abilities. Among the invented instruments include xylophones created from recycled bicycles, pumped-up organ pipes, and drums that create visual patterns of sounds. These engaging instruments create a space of hands-on play and improvisation that invites people to explore sounds in an open-ended and creative way with one another. Featured at popular events such as the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, the Musical Playground is active year round through installations and workshops while being supported by ongoing research into music pedagogy, instrument design, and new media. It has also been hosted in spaces such as schools, parks, festivals, and community centres.
