The Gastown Grand Prix delivers heart-pumping action on the neighbourhood’s historic streets. In a few weeks, Olympic-calibre cyclists will speed down our cobblestones for an exhilarating, circuit-style bike race, with the start-finish located next to the iconic steam clock.
This is one of the only elite sporting events that’s free to watch and open to all ages. Spectators are just inches away from all the action – you can literally feel a gust of wind as professional riders fly by the sideboards at over 50km per hour. There may even be a few crashes when it’s all on the line and they’re riding for the finish.
The first race took place in 1973, and the event has since become a part of Canada’s biggest cycling week. B.C. Superweek is packed with more laps, riders and adrenaline than any other competition in the country. This year, the Gastown Grand Prix is introducing it’s first-ever youth race, which will kick off the whole event. Fifty young riders will get the chance to experience the thrills of the Gastown circuit, giving spectators a look at the next generation of cycling greats.

With the largest purse of any criterium in North America, the Gastown Grand Prix attracts elite cyclists to compete on one of the most challenging courses, famous for its winding cobblestones and signature hairpin turn at Water and Cordova.
Roads will be closed to vehicle traffic on event day as the team sets up, so plan to park your car nearby and walk into the neighbourhood. The route takes riders up Water Street, around the turn and onto Cordova, turning again at Carrall to go around the Gassy Jack statue and back up Water Street to the line.
Come down early after work to snag a spot along the course race, or head to a restaurant patio to catch the action with a drink in hand. At 1.2 kilometres long, there are lots of great places to watch, cheer and take pictures, including the hairpin turn and the start/finish line. Both spots will be busy, so be sure to arrive before 5:30pm to ensure you get the best view.
After the race, spectators can unwind and swap stories inside one of our bustling restaurants. Select establishments will be offering race day specials in honour of the event.
The Gastown Grand Prix is free to attend and family friendly. Gather your friends and head down to Gastown on Wednesday July 15th to experience the adrenaline rush!
