Keep that Stache looking flash! It's Mo-vember trim time.
Written by Gastown Admin
Hail to Mo-Vember! Where men have cast away the daily shave and let their facial hair grow free. What a wonderful collective effort is being made to raise money for cancer research and for many of us to have a bit of fun along the way. But in all earnestness, there are still a few weeks to go, and you can’t show up to the office or a meeting looking like Di Caprio in The Revenant (Google it if you need convincing). Gastown is an oasis for all men seeking refuge from bushy staches, scraggly hair and patchy beards. Here’s a list of the finest grooming establishments on offer, to get you looking dapper and help you keep your Mo’ till the end of No’.
The 18th Amendment Barber Shop – a fine shop based on tradition and designed for the modern man. They specialize in hot towel shaves, beard and moustache trims, classic haircuts and fades. Appropriately situated in a heritage building on East Cordova, The 18th Amendment Shop is steeped in history; old world grooming methods for the 21st century. Stay awhile and settle comfortably into the 100-year old Koken barber chairs.
There’s Barber & Co – picture a line of restored Belmont barber chairs along with classic theatre seats, facing a view of the electric current flowing through Abbott Street. They have a dartboard, racy mirror art and friendly, eccentric barbers. This great union of barbers deliver traditional straight razor hot shaves using hot towels and essential oils with impeccable results.
An experienced gent in men’s grooming is Bryan of London – located in the Landing Building. Bryan has been working in Gastown for 15 years and has been cutting hair for over 25. He will do a bang up job on your mo and beard.
Over at Fortknight Barbers, the friendly and scissor proficient, good gentlemen of groom, pride themselves not on fashion, but style. Accurately described as “A place to unwind, catch up on community news, and receive top shelf service”. You’ll find it quiet here on Alexander Street and Forknight always seems to be a place where you can really chill out, relax and be taken care of.Plenty of hot towels for the face and many razor sharp trims to be had at Fortknight.
Down in the underground is a gem of great value – The Gastown Grooming Room – ruled by the friendly and effervescent, Joe from Dublin. A barber for life, he has impeccable style that goes into every cut he delivers. Take good care of yourself and get a hot towel, beard and neck clean up while enjoying the many stories that Joe will tell you.
JD’s Barbershop – the original location opened for business in Gastown in 2002 – is a relaxed environment where guys can feel comfortable and can walk away looking their best. They offer excellent beard trims and hot shaves and on Monday and Tuesday, students get a discount.
At the back of Frank & Oak you’ll find a pair of classic barber chairs that aren’t for show. There’s always an eager barber at the ready, more that happy to spruce you up and get you looking as sharp as a blade.
