These aren’t your average flowers

Megan at the Olla Urban Flower Project has been creating unique bouquets and potting some elegant plants in preparation for mom’s big day – and there’s plenty to choose from. Located next door to the Water Street Café, Olla’s upper level mezzanine is an unexpected oasis in the middle of our concrete jungle. With a focus on socially conscious arrangements and living containers that are suitable for city-dwellers, it’s a great place for green gifts. The shop is open Tuesday to Friday and will have extended hours next weekend.

Need something heaven sent?

Angel wings dot the shelves in this home décor boutique, well known for it’s custom furnishings, Moroccan leather poufs and decadent dishware. L’Atelier embodies the best of a Parisian flea market, featuring French vintage and industrial pieces that are sure to give any space a shabby chic and gilded feel. There’s plenty to peruse in-store and even more on-line. The shop also specializes in reupholstering vintage pieces.

Solve her struggles with a big bag

Have you ever been out with mom, needed a single sock and watched her dig one out from the depths of her purse? You’re not the only one. Moms have stuff and they need somewhere to put it. M0851 has the solution. Designed and crafted in Montreal, their leather goods include clutches, backpacks and cross-body bags, as well as some pretty amazing (and big) totes for the mom who literally puts everything but the kitchen sink in there.

No time to sweat the small stuff?

Meet Kit and Ace. The luxury apparel company offers clothes that have all the functionality of your favourite performance wear, but with style, sophistication and cashmere. Yes, cashmere. Outfit mom in a top made from soft, washable cashmere and you may never see her rocking that Sun Run ‘92 relic ever again. With tees, tanks, dresses and more, it’s the latest must-visit spot for basics on Water Street.

Honour mom and ‘mother earth’ at the same time.

Nicole Bridger is new to the neighbourhood, but already a legend when it comes to environmentally conscious apparel in Vancouver. Her collections are effortlessly chic and designed to flatter, each piece carrying an added dose of inspiration. Consider gifting a ‘patience tee’ if you’ve been naughty and are looking to earn some humour points, or a ‘wisdom jacket’ to show mom that even though you sometime roll your eyes, you know she’s got all the answers.

Take it outside.

We’ve all heard that line growing up. You’re making too much noise / causing chaos / generally destroying the house, so take it outside. Surprise mom by doing just that with a gorgeous patio set by Fermob from Orling & Wu. The bistro table and chairs, originally designed at the same time as the Eiffel Tower, are colourful, charming and offer the perfect stage to serve tea for two.

MothersDay-LYNNstevenMake a day of it.

It’s not always about a thing in a box. Show mom why Gastown is your go-to with brunch at Chill Winston, Blacktail or Brioche and a little shopping to walk off that mimosa buzz. Then, head over to Float House for an hour of complete peace and quiet (something moms rarely experience) before wrapping things up at Mosquito with a glass of bubbly and a decadent dessert. Boom. Done.
