The Gastown Guide to Going Western at the Calgary Stampede

Between tractor pulls, sheep shearing demos and junior steer riding (yes, we checked out the full schedule), it’s easy to get caught up in the wild west. Our suggestion – blend coastal style with cowboy classics for a look that won’t have you second-guessing those selfies.

START WITH THE BASICS

Here’s an excuse to pick up some new denim. With plenty of cuts to choose from – skinnies, straight, boyfriend or bootcut – choose a pair that speaks to your personal style. There’s several spots in Gastown to score great denim, including dutil., Nifty DoNeighbour, Roden Gray, Haven and Army & Navy.

If you’re looking to push a bit further, denim on denim is having a moment right now and you could always give the ‘texas tuxedo’ a run for it’s money. If not, stripes and plaid play just as well in the western world as they do at home. We spotted a couple options at Nouvelle Nouvelle, LYNNsteven and One of a Few, but there are also great prints at Motherland and lots of staple solids at Oak & Fort. Community Thrift is also a great place to check out for pre-loved tops and bottoms that are easy on the wallet.

ADD A FEW PIECES OF FLAIR

This is where things could easily go pear shaped, so trust the experts. Head straight to OK Boot Corral for the things that will add authenticity to your ensemble. Staples include boots, bolo ties and belt buckles, but it’s really all about the hat. The modern cowboy hat has remained unchanged in construction or underlying design since the Stetson was created in 1865, and you’ll find plenty of options in the back room of the Carrall Street shop.

BRING SOME EXTRAS

If you’re going to Calgary for multiple days, it might be good to throw a few accessories into your bag for mixing and matching. Straw hats are perfect for hot days and Gastown has a brand new shop that specializes in hand-made Italian options. You’ll find Cappelleria Bertacchi on Abbott between Water and Cordova. And, right around the corner at Meadow Gifts, you’ll find some colourful silk chiffon scarves that can stand in for a boring bandana anyday.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNNIES

There’s nothing worse than being caught at mid-day without your sunglasses (ok, there are worse things, but stay with us here). Pop in to Rowan Sky for shades by Illesteva or check out options from Bailey Nelson, Bruce Eyewear and Eyeland Framemakers

If you do head to Cowtown for the big event, snap a selfie and tag us @MyGastown. We might regram your Stampede-style!
